I am a mother of two children who attend the South Shore Waldorf School and Kindergarten in rural Nova Scotia and am also the co-chair of that small school together with Anne Greer. In my fictional film, A Stone's Throw, I wanted to explore the spirit of the intentional community that springs up around the formation of a Waldorf School. In a way, the school itself becomes a character in the film, one that demands equal doses of honesty and loyalty.
As a person deeply concerned about environmental issues I also wanted to examine the potency of the deep reverence for nature that arises as an extension of the Waldorf curriculum. At the same time, I wanted to explore the notion that intention, action and consequence are inextricably linked and that love (and children) can sometimes open us up to possibilities that may otherwise remain hidden.
The protagonist in my film, Jack Walker, a self-styled eco-activist, undergoes a transformation as he falls in love with a Waldorf teacher and becomes engaged in the life of the school community. We filmed in our tiny 100 year old school house and worked with many of the children and parents of the school community both as artists and actors. |
